91% of Marketers Use AI. Only 41% Can Prove It Works.
Last month, a senior marketer I know walked out of her third interview in a row where the panel asked the same question. Not about strategy, not about portfolio, not about the brand work she had spent the last decade doing. The question was: “Are you using AI in your day-to-day? Can you walk us through how?”
She told them yes, of course. ChatGPT for first drafts. Some Midjourney for visuals. A bit of Claude for analysis. The hiring manager nodded politely and moved on. She did not get the role. None of the three.
What she did not have - and could not produce in the room - was anything that turned the “yes” into evidence.
This is happening to a lot of people right now. The Resume Genius 2026 Job Seeker Insights Report found 22% of candidates are already using AI live during interviews - and Phenom’s 2026 recruiting data shows 62% of employers expect to use AI across most hiring stages by the end of this year. The interview is fast becoming an open-book test about open-book tests. Both sides have the same tools. The differentiator is no longer “do you use AI?” It is “Can you show me what you have actually built with it?”
And the data on whether marketers can show that is bleak. Supermetrics’ 2026 Marketing Data Report found that 91% of marketers actively use AI in their work. The share who can demonstrate measurable ROI from it dropped from 49% to 41% year over year. MIT’s enterprise AI study put a sharper number on it: 95% of AI pilots fail to show measurable ROI at all.
The interview question is sharper than it sounds. It is not asking whether you have used a tool. It is asking whether your usage produced anything that an employer can verify. And for most of the workforce, the answer is: not really.
That is the problem this post is about. Not the anxiety. The credential.
Why LinkedIn Skills Don’t Mean Anything
Proof of work for the rest of us - the people who are not engineers with a GitHub or designers with a Behance - has been attempted before. LinkedIn tried it. Skills assessments. Skill endorsements. The whole gamified system that, if you have been on the platform for any length of time, you have probably mostly stopped looking at.
It did not work. And the reason it did not work is instructive.
LinkedIn made it too easy to add a skill, and too easy to endorse one. Within a few years, “Strategy” was on a few hundred million profiles. So was “Leadership.” So was “Communication.” Half the people reading this post probably have skills on their LinkedIn profile that they themselves cannot remember adding, that they are not sure they have, and that nobody has ever asked them to demonstrate. The signal collapsed because the medium incentivized volume over verification. Everybody had everything. Therefore, nobody had anything.
The few credentials that did keep their meaning over the last twenty years all share one feature. Employers actually demanded them. The CFA. The USMLE. The bar exam. FINRA Series 7. The harder AWS certifications. These survived not because they were rigorous in the abstract - though they are - but because the receiving side of the transaction insisted on them. A regulator, a hospital admissions committee, and a hiring partner who would not advance a candidate without one. When the demand side cared, the supply side stayed honest.
For marketers, content strategists, SEO professionals, ops people, analysts, PMs, designers - everyone outside the regulated professions - there was no demand-side body that could enforce that kind of standard. Building credentials that hard, evaluating them that thoroughly, was an industry that did not exist. The cost of evaluation killed it before it could form.
This is the part that has shifted recently, and the shift is the entire reason this post exists.
What Changes When Evaluation Gets Cheap
For the first time, the cost of evaluating real work just dropped to roughly nothing.
AI can now read a piece of professional output - a campaign brief, a content strategy, an SEO audit, a positioning doc - and assess it against benchmarks, structured criteria, and the actual best-practice patterns of the discipline. It does this faster, more consistently, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of the senior reviewer who used to be the only person qualified to do it. It does not replace human judgment. It does the heavy lifting that made evaluation prohibitively expensive at scale.
That single shift unlocks something the workforce has not had: a credential where the bar is real because evaluation has finally become affordable.

Customer success. PM. Ops. The interview question will come to all of them. The question is whether you will have an answer beyond the verbal one.
